When one considers the atmosphere of a destination Jersey Shore beach town or summer hot spot, Ocean Grove’s tranquil streets might not be first in mind, but after spending even just a day in this one-mile community, it becomes obvious why it holds such a strong place in the hearts of both its full time and seasonal residents.
“I think Ocean Grove is interesting to a lot of people,” Jack Green Realty Owner, Jack Green said. “It’s quirky. There’s a strong sense of community and an emphasis on porches. It’s a walking town.”
Nestled between Asbury Park and Bradley Beach, Ocean Grove was founded in 1869 by a small group of Methodist worshippers looking for a summer retreat. They set up tents and spent the summer reaping the benefits of the salty sea air. After nearly 150 years, Ocean Grove has managed to maintain its commitment to the church’s values and teachings while also adapting to the area’s changing social climate. For example, the gates no longer close to vehicular traffic on Sundays.
Jack Green grew up spending his summers in the Ocean Grove tent community while both his father and grandfather held leadership roles in the community’s historical district committee known as the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association. He slowly got involved in the town’s restoration projects, first volunteering to restore the Great Auditorium, which is Ocean Grove’s iconic assembly hall where big name performers such as the Beach Boys still return each year.
Aside from the performances, Ocean Grove also boasts one of the largest 4th of July parades around (Think: firetrucks, clowns, banners, streamers, and an out-of-this-world kazoo band!)
Perhaps what draws people
To the town most often is the architecture. Ocean Grove is known for its extensive collection of Victorian homes, which come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. Many of the surrounding towns have taken to modern style rebuilds while Ocean Grove remains committed to preserving its historical integrity through renewal and restoration. Aside from single family homes, Ocean Grove offers two-family homes as well as condos available for ownership or seasonal rental. Vacationers also have the option of staying at any one of the many inns, hotels, and bed and breakfasts.
With Asbury Park’s revitalization in recent years, more people are also discovering the benefits of Ocean Grove. “Ocean Grove has always had that quaint hometown seaside summer feel,” says Jack Green’s son, who works as realtor for the company. “The revitalization of Asbury Park has added a new layer of greatness to Ocean Grove by giving people a different option.”
In other words, Ocean Grove residents have the best of both worlds. Spend an evening enjoying Asbury’s thriving nightlife and then take the short walk back to the serene comfort of Ocean Grove.
